GRC at the Munich Security Conference, February 3, 2012

The Chairman of the Gulf Research Center, Dr. Abdulaziz Sager is attending the 48th Munich Security Conference, one of the preeminent meetings of decision- and policy makers on current and global security issues. In addition to focusing on the Euro-Atlantic Security Community, the rise of Asia and the issue of energy security, this year’s event also places emphasis on
the regional and global implications of the recent developments in the Middle East. The recent rhetorical escalation over the Iranian nuclear program is also expected to feature prominently in the discussion. Among the key attendees are the US Secretary of Defense and US Secretary of State, the Secretary-General of NATO as well as numerous heads of state and ministers.

Gulf Research Center Maintains Ranking in 2011 Global Think Tank Survey

The Gulf Research Center (GRC) has maintained its position as the second leading think tank in the Middle East and North Africa region in the 2011 Global 'Go-To Think Tanks' survey released on January 18, 2012 The survey is prepared by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program of the University of Pennsylvania. The 2011 survey looked at 6,545 public policy organizations from 182 countries, including 329 organizations in the Middle East and North Africa.
The objective of the Global Think Tank Survey is to recognize the leading public policy think tanks and highlight the important contributions these organizations make to governmental decision-making and the development of civil society worldwide. The ranking is the result of a nomination process conducted by experts and peer institutions. Several criteria are considered including the rigor and relevance of research and analysis, the ability to produce new knowledge or policy alternatives, and efforts to contribute to positive change in their given region.

The US withdrawal from Iraq will leave a power vacuum in the Gulf, analysts say, paving the way for Iran to increase its influence in this economic and politically strategic region, a concern echoed by America's Gulf allies.
"The US withdrawal from Iraq will no doubt create a power vacuum," said Abdulaziz Sager, chairman of the Gulf Research Centre, noting that the US presence in the region empowered Gulf Arab countries with "whom they share interests and are bound by security agreements."
"This (US) presence gave them (Gulf countries) a sense of stability and security due to America's military capabilities," said Sager, adding that the troop withdrawal will "strengthen Iran's military and intelligence influence," in Iraq.

Syria's opposition has launched a new form of civil disobedience with a general strike, even as armed resistance escalates. The opposing tactics highlight a growing split among those who seek to oust the government, a divide echoed in the mixed signals of the international community.
Some experts, though, think the armed effort so far has its limits. Dr. Abdulaziz Sager, chairman of the Gulf Research Center in Jeddah, argues it has yet to reach a critical mass.
"To reach the point of a civil war you will need a mass defection from the military and high-ranking [officers] at a large number to enter into that one," said Sager. "So far, we do not have that huge number that have defected from the military. Second, the type of weapons they have, still it is a light weapon, an AK-47 or sort of the light one they cannot fight or cannot be used against tanks and heavy military movements."

Under the patronage of HRH Prince Saud bin Faisal Al-Saud, Foreign Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the 2011 Gulf Forum entitled “The Gulf and the Globe” began in Riyadh on Sunday. The Forum is organized by the Gulf Research Center and the Institute of Diplomatic Studies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia. The first day featured prominent presentations and discussions on regional security dynamics, the role of the GCC states and the relations with powers such as the United States, Russia and the United Nations. The event continued on Monday with a focus on emerging powers, the energy and economics challenges as well as an outlook

GRC Disputes Daily Mail Allegations

The story that appeared in the Daily Mail on October 10, 2011 written by James Chapman on the current controversy surrounding Dr. Liam Fox and his relationship to one Adam Werrity makes references to the Gulf Research Center which have to be corrected. Not only does the story present a false picture of the institute but it makes assumptions and suggests innuendos about the Gulf Research Center and its Chairman Dr. Abdulaziz Sager which are misleading and completely inaccurate. The meeting that took place on April 15, 2007 in the GRC office came about upon the request of Mr. Werrity, who had been suggested to the GRC on behalf of a prominent and internationally active think tank. The purpose of the meeting was to have a discussion on the continuing developments in the broader Gulf region in Dr. Fox’s capacity as the UK Shadow Defence Secretary. Read more.. |
